TUMCREATE is a multidisciplinary research platform of the Technical University Munich (TUM) at the Singapore Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE). We are joining forces with universities, public agencies, and industry for the advancement of future technologies.

Our large-scale Food Science program, ‘Proteins4Singapore,’ funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), is a collaborative effort between the Technical University Munich (TUM), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI). As part of the Proteins4Singapore team, you will work alongside renowned scientists in plant and food technology, food chemistry, materials science, and business sustainability. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the program aims to develop state-of-the-art methods and techniques to ensure a sustainable protein supply for highly urbanized environments.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Research Engineer to contribute to the development and optimization of mechanical and electronic systems for decentralized food manufacturing under the Proteins4Singapore project. The role involves supporting the design, testing, and integration of control systems and sensor technologies aimed at enhancing food production efficiency and quality. This position supports sustainable food solutions through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The contract is for 1 year with the possibility of extension based on performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of control systems for food processing equipment.
  • Support the integration of sensors for continuous monitoring and quality control.
  • Contribute to firmware development for process automation and system synchronization.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to assist in projects combining 3D printing and extrusion with food manufacturing techniques
  • Participate in data collection, analysis and technical documentation to support project reporting

Key Competencies

  • Proficiency in firmware and software development, including real-time control algorithms and open-source platforms.
  • Experience in mechatronics, electronic systems, and automation. Familiarity in CFD, FEM simulations, and rheology for material flow analysis is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of food processing technologies, particularly for food-grade and semi-solid materials, with attention to safety and user-centric design considerations.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaboration and technical reporting.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, with strong problem-solving abilities to work in a dynamic research environment.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Food Processing & Engineering, or related disciplines from a reputable university.
  • Minimum 1 year hands-on experience with hardware and firmware development, as well as real-time process control systems.
  • Prior experience working in applied research or industry settings related to mechanical design or food technology is desirable.
