Interacting with Artificial Intelligence in AVs

A team at NTU is addressing the following research questions:

  1. Since there will be no driver for the vehicle, how comfortable do the passengers feel while riding in an autonomous vehicle (AV)?
  2. Is there a need and, if so, what are the means by which both the passengers and the vehicle communicate with each other?

Two test rigs are used, one using Virtual Reality and the other a life-size test rig.

The test rigs replay a journey. The graphical presence of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) conversing through an ‘AuroVisual’ language is on display on the roof, inside the vehicle, and voice communication is possible with the AV.
